    Shrinking Aral Sea From 20002014

    Shrinking Aral Sea From 20002014
    Pic
The Aral Sea, was once the fourth largest in the world.
"Although irrigation made the desert bloom, it devastated the Aral Sea. This series of images from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite documents the changes. At the start of the series in 2000, the lake was already a fraction of its 1960 extent (black line). The Northern Aral Sea (sometimes called the Small Aral Sea) had separated from the Southern (Large) Aral Sea. The Southern Aral Sea had split into eastern and western lobes that remained tenuously connected at both ends.
By 2001, the southern connection had been severed, and the shallower eastern part retreated rapidly over the next several years. Especially large retreats in the eastern lobe of the Southern Sea appear to have occurred between 2005 and 2009, when drought limited and then cut off the flow of the Amu Darya. Water levels then fluctuated annually between 2009 and 2014 in alternately dry and wet years. Dry conditions in 2014 caused the Southern Sea’s eastern lobe to completely dry up for the first time in modern times."

    Mad Honey Psychedelic Honey
    News
"The dark, reddish, “mad honey,” known as deli bal in Turkey, contains an ingredient from rhododendron nectar called grayanotoxin — a natural neurotoxin that, even in small quantities, brings on light-headedness and sometimes, hallucinations. In the 1700s, the Black Sea region traded this potent produce with Europe, where the honey was infused with drinks to give boozers a greater high than alcohol could deliver.
When over-imbibed, however, the honey can cause low blood pressure and irregularities in the heartbeat that bring on nausea, numbness, blurred vision, fainting, potent hallucinations, seizures, and even death, in rare cases. Nowadays, cases of mad honey poisoning crop up every few years—oftentimes in travelers who have visited Turkey." [ link ]

SmartMat The World s First Intelligent Yoga
    Sport

A new intelligent yoga mat which has been created and launched over on the Indiegogo crowd funding website this month called the SmartMat. The SmartMat has been equipped with a wealth of sensors that connect to the companion smartphone application to provide you with instruction on your positions whilst monitoring the pressure and balance of your body on the mat.
When you first unpack and activate your SmartMat, it will take you through a “calibration” process. First and foremost, this involves you inputting some basic information such as gender, height, and weight. On a deeper level, the calibration process will then ask you to lay down on SmartMat and it will take measurements to determine arm span and various ratios between your limbs. SmartMat is able to recognize the difference based on individual body types.
After the initial measurements are completed, SmartMat then takes you through a series of “baseline” poses. This is to determine what your individual abilities and limitations are. For example, in Downward Dog some can place their heels on the ground. For others, this option is just not available. SmartMat will learn these things about you and your practice in the baseline calibration setting so that it can give you intelligent and practical feedback during the heat of your sessions

The Wondrous Water Towers of New York City
    Pic
The Wondrous Water Towers of New York City by  Pop Chart Lab. Big pic!
"This visual compendium arrays a curated selection of the city skyline’s unsung signatures: its wondrous water towers. From the rainbow-tiled tower in DUMBO to the twin-tank setup in Midtown East to the lime-tinged filtration-point in Richmond Hill, Queens, over two dozen industrial artifacts have been richly hand-illustrated here, highlighting the heterogeneity of these high-rising hydro-structures. (Fun fact: Though many of these towers may look like antiques, this time-tested technology has yet to be topped, and still provides precious H20 to most buildings in the city six stories or taller.)"
