Lightweight Exoskeleton Lets You Run 10 Easier
    Gear  |  Tech

Jason Kerestes is a graduate student at Arizona State University. With support from DARPA, he has developed the AirLegs exoskeleton. It's a small machine worn on the back that decreases the metabolic cost of walking and running by about 10% versus not wearing the machine.
"This device was tested at the Army Research Laboratories in September 2013 and demonstrated a 10% reduction in metabolic cost (compared to no device) for users running at high speeds. It is the only device known to the US Army to oficially augment the human running gait cycle."

5 Crazy Ways Social Media Is Changing Your Brain Right Now
    Gear  |  Video
"California is the most populated state in the United States, and the third largest. It's almost double the size of the United Kingdom and slightly larger than Japan. If it was it's own independent country (as it was briefly for a few weeks in 1846), it would have the 8th largest economy in the world by GDP. It contains the highest summit and the lowest desert in the Contiguous United States (and the second-lowest point in the world), both of which are in the same county. It's most known for movies, technology, wine, and national parks, but also grows more than a third of the vegetables consumed in the US, two-thirds of the fruits and nuts, and an unknown but presumably huge percentage of marijuana. It contains every major climatological biome except tundra. More important than those facts, to me, is that I was born and spent most of my life here. "

The Dutch are masters in water management. Without their ability to 'manage' the seawater, river water and groundwater, much of the low-lying Netherlands would be under water.
This video shows the astonishing man-made shoreline of the Netherlands. Nick Crane explores how ingenious Dutch engineers created massive coastal defences following the great North Sea flood in 1953 which killed thousands of people in the Netherlands.

"Traditional Japanese sake production can be complicated and exacting, but this kit makes it easy with everything you'll need (except 1 lb. of white raisins and 2.5 lbs. of sugar) to brew multiple one gallon batches of your own sake in a hands-on exploration of ancient art and science. Hailing from Nara period Japan (8th century CE), sake is a time-honored rice "wine" steeped in Japanese culture, but you can bring a bit of this rich tradition to your kitchen without a trip to Kobe's legendary breweries. A giant white rabbit by Florentijn Hofman
    Gear  |  Projects
Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman's latest creation, a giant rabbit, reclines on an old aircraft hangar at the Taoyuan Land Art Festival in Taoyuan, Taiwan. The organizer said the rabbit is the second piece of art work following Hofman's rubber duck for the coming Mid-Autumn Festival and will be displayed between September 4 and 14 at the Taoyuan military base. Hofman's big yellow duck drew millions of visitors when it toured the island last year, and festival organizers are hoping the rabbit will do the same. "Superclusters – regions of space that are densely packed with galaxies – are the biggest structures in the Universe. But scientists have struggled to define exactly where one supercluster ends and another begins. Now, a team based in Hawaii has come up with a new technique that maps the Universe according to the flow of galaxies across space. Redrawing the boundaries of the cosmic map, they redefine our home supercluster and name it Laniakea, which means ‘immeasurable heaven’ in Hawaiian.  "

Steve Bargeron was fishing from a dock in Fort Pierce as he watched a fellow fisherman pull this creature out of the water. Steve said the massive thing was about 18 inches long and striking its own tail, so he grabbed it by its back like a lobster. Scientists think it may be some type of mantis shrimp.

    Dyson 360 Eye Robot Vacuum
    Gear  |  Gadget

The new Dyson 360 Eye robot vacuum cleaner, it was unveiled in Tokyo. Like its name implies, the Dyson 360 Eye is equipped with a 360-degree panoramic camera and infrared sensors to look at an entire room and determine its position. The camera captures up to 30 frames per second and analyzes each shot to identify a room's geometry and potential obstacles, and update its path accordingly. Most robot vacuums have some sensor system to look or feel around a room, but a 360-degree panoramic camera is a new approach that could potentially make the 360 Eye the smartest robot vacuum yet. Instead of wheels, the Dyson 360 Eye moves around on rubber treads, letting it handle multiple floor types. According to Dyson, the 360 Eye traveled more than 670 miles and over 342,000 bump strips during testing to ensure that its suspension functioned. The Dyson 360 Eye will launch in Japan later this year, it isn't planned to hit North America until fall 2015.

How To make M biusLoop Bacon
    Gear  |  DIY
Instructables user  made this möbius bacon strips by twisting rashers of bacon around a rolling pin, then gluing them in place with a meat adhesive called transglutaminase. After letting the glue sit for a day, he removed the bacon from the rolling pin and baked it.
"For generations, crazed dreamers and bold pioneers have searched for a method to turn ordinary bacon into a perfect loop of uninterrupted beauty. A loop with a single, seamless, salty surface. Never ending or beginning. Ever continuing, ever bacon.
For just as long, mathematicians and butchers alike have sworn it couldn’t be done. “No,” they said. “We won’t give you a research grant,” they said. “There’s no such thing as a Department for Experimental Topo-charcuterie,” they said.
Today, with the unveiling of the astonishing Möbius bacon, I intend to prove them all wrong

Zoo polar bears will use slinky to warm up
    Gear  |  Tech
Underground heating-cooling system will raise bar for energy efficiency
Polar bears like it cool, elephants like it warm and the Oregon Zoo likes it sustainable. Now, zoo construction crews have begun work on a project that will let these two endangered species keep each other's thermostats at comfy levels via an innovative high-tech system buried 12 feet underground.
There's also a "Slinky" involved. It's called a geothermal loop.
Heat is created as a byproduct of cooling the polar bear swimming pools at the zoo. And rather than just expel that heat, the geothermal system will direct it through rows of Slinky-like coiled pipes buried deep in the northern section of Elephant Lands.
The ground maintains a constant temperature, insulating the pipes. Then, when it's time to crank the thermostat, pumps connected to the system will deliver heat to Forest Hall, the 32,000-square-foot indoor portion of Elephant Lands.
The geothermal loop and other energy-efficient design systems are expected to cut Elephant Lands' energy requirements in half, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent and serve as the primary heat source for what will be one of the country's largest indoor elephant facilities.
