This is a backpack jetpack for runner developed by Arizona State University. Called the 4MM because the ultimate goal is to propel a soldier fast enough to run a four-minute mile, the jetpack is being developed by Jason Kerestes with funding from DARPA. The prototype weighs in at eleven pounds which by itself isn't particularly heavy, but in addition to everything else a soldier has to carry it certainly adds up. So the hope is that overall there are still some speed gains when wearing it, and so far in testing it's been found to shave almost 20 seconds off a runner's one-mile dash.

Cliff House is a  five storey modular home clings to the side of a cliff, designed by Modscape. This Cliff House concept inspired by the way barnacles cling to the hull of a ship, a concept was developed for a modular home to hang off the side of a cliff as opposed to sitting on top of it. The home is visualised as a natural extension of the cliff face rather than an addition to the landscape, creating an absolute connection with the ocean.

    Apple Watch
    Gear  |  Apple
Apple has officially unveiled the Apple Watch. Available in  two sizes and three models(Watch, Watch sport and Watch Edition) - original, with a custom stainless steel alloy case; Sport, with an anodized aluminum alloy case; and Edition, with an 18K gold case in yellow or rose and Sapphire crystal. Powered by a custom S1 processor and the sapphire covered touchscreen. Apple itself has developed two different fitness apps for the watch, too. The “Activity” app is meant to track your movement throughout the day. The “Workout” app, on the other hand, focuses on specific sports.  Apple also built a cool way to see your photos. You start out zoomed out, with all of your photos showing as minuscule thumbnails. Then you use the crown to zoom in. The watch uses the same gesture to zoom in and out of Apple Maps, too.

Deep math of the folded pizza slice
    Gear  |  Other
Why does a flat pizza slice flop over unless you bend it into a curve? Thank Gaussian curvature, the 19th century mathematical principle that underpins everything from corrugated cardboard to eggshells to Pringles chips.
Wired's Aatish Bhatia uses the pizza-slice as a jumping-off point to explain one of the most elegant and fascinating parts of geometry, and once you read his work, you'll never be able to look at a curved surface again:
"Well, the pizza slice was flat before you picked it up (in math speak, it has zero Gaussian curvature). Gauss’s remarkable theorem assures us that one direction of the slice must always remain flat — no matter how you bend it, the pizza must retain a trace of its original flatness. When the slice flops over, the flat direction (shown in red below) is pointed sideways, which isn’t helpful for eating it. But by folding the pizza slice sideways, you’re forcing it to become flat in the other direction – the one that points towards your mouth. Theorema egregium, indeed.
By curving a sheet in one direction, you force it to become stiff in the other direction. Once you recognize this idea, you start seeing it everywhere. Look closely at a blade of grass. It’s often folded along its central vein, which adds stiffness and prevents it from flopping over. Engineers frequently use curvature to add strength to structures. In the Zarzuela race track in Madrid, the Spanish structural engineer Eduardo Torroja designed an innovative concrete roof that stretches out from the stadium, covering a large area while remaining just a few inches thick. It’s the pizza trick in disguise

"This is the fully animated story of making four bookcases. The four cases are made from two pieces of walnut veneer plywood with almost no waste. The base for the cases is made from solid walnut with mitered corners The bookcases are 33 inches tall and 47 inches wide. The finish is wipe on polyurethane. They fit under and within the spacing of the windows in the living room.
I shot approximately 11,700 frames for this animation and used roughly 6,400 of them. I worked on this project intermittently from the 5th of January to 1st of March, 2014."
