Ultimate VR simulator throws you around in
    Gear  |  Tech

Virtual reality headsets can paired with specially-built controllers. They can even be paired with omnidirectional treadmills. Now, a team of technical engineers have built the CableRobot simulator - a carbon fibre cage that can move in real time around a large open space. The hexagonal frame is attached to six hydraulic cables which then move, rotate and tilt the sphere with the player sat inside. A wireless VR headset with an optical tracking system is linked to its controls, which activate the frame in response to the player's own movements.
The player wears a wireless VR headset inside a carbon fibre cage, which is then suspended in mid-air and thrown around the room using eight steel cables. The exposed pod is able to tilt, bank and move with an acceleration of up to 1.5g in response to the VR experience. Researchers have shown off some basic flight and racing simulations.
It's still very much a prototype, the invention is the work of the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, based in the German town of Tübingen.

Forest Megaphone gigantic wooden megaphones listen
    Gear  |  Design
These architectural objects are "gigantic wooden megaphones" for the forest, part of an acoustic installation in Estonia's gorgeous Pähni Nature Centre for amplifying the sounds of the landscape.  Created by design students in the Interior Architecture program at the Estonian Academy of Arts. It's a great idea for a project. Sit in them, read books, whisper to friends, listen to birds.
"On September 18th, an installation of three gigantic wooden megaphones built by a team of Estonian Academy of Arts interior architecture students will be opened for all forest dwellers for resting, contemplation and above all – listening to the sounds of nature and forests around them. …This is however not the only use for the installation, as it will double as a sitting and resting area, and can be used as a stage for small events."

Hoverboard Technologies has launched a new personal mobility device called the Hoverboard, which is equipped with a mono wheel mechanism, powered by  an electric motor. A  top speed of 16mph, and a range of up to 12miles on a single charge.  Once flat the on-board rechargeable battery can be recharged super fast from flat in just 16 minutes. As well as being equipped with a powerful electric motor the personal mobility device is also equipped with gyroscope stabilisation to make it feel as though you are hovering while riding. It is up for funding on Kickstarter.
"At the center of the Hoverboard is the “Drive Unit”. This removable module that contains the Direct-Drive, Industrial Class BLDC (Brushless Direct-Current) servomotor, bearings and position sensors. The Drive Unit is where most of the manufactured cost are concentrated.
The drive unit is “Smart”, with a small micro-controller embedded to store all of it’s unique characteristics and present those to the Motor Control Unit. With this arrangement, Drive Units are simply interchangeable without any “tuning” or other calibration necessary – just swap and go. It is possible that in the future, there will be alternative Drive Units with different power levels or operating characteristics
