The reactable is a collaborative electronic music instrument with a tabletop tangible user interface.(hard to know what it is? Directly watch the below Video, So cool!) Several simultaneous performers share complete control over the instrument by moving physical objects on a luminous table surface. By moving and relating these objects, representing components of a classic modular synthesizer, users can create complex and dynamic sonic topologies, with generators, filters and modulators, in a kind of tangible modular synthesizer or graspable flow-controlled programming language.
The reactable hardware is based on a translucent, round multi-touch surface. A camera situated beneath the table, continuously analyzes the surface, tracking the player's finger tips and the nature, position and orientation of physical objects that are distributed on its surface. These objects represent the components of a classic modular synthesizer, the players interact by moving these objects, changing their distance, orientation and the relation to each other. These actions directly control the topological structure and parameters of the sound synthesizer. A projector, also from underneath the table, draws dynamic animations on its surface, providing a visual feedback of the state, the activity and the main characteristics of the sounds produced by the audio synthesizer. Heart Robot, who has been programmed to react 'emotionally', depending on how he is treated, has brought out the bully in many of the visitors to a science event. The electronic puppet, created by scientists at the University of the West of England in Bristol, visibly relaxes in response to soothing, low sounds or a gentle touch. 'Heart Robot looks like a cross between ET and Gollum (from Lord Of The Rings)and is about the size of a small child. 'Different children react to him very differently. They either want to hug and cuddle him, and look after him like a doll or baby, or they just want to scare him.' (TCF, 1977)During the nail-biting assault on the Death Star in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, this is the actual filming miniature of the T.I.E. Fighter that bumps into Darth Vader's fighter knocking him out of the trench, allowing Luke to destroy the Death Star. This historic piece is from the collection of Academy Award-winning Visual Effects wizard, Richard Edlund. The design concepts for the T.I.E. (Twin Ion Engine) Fighters of the Galactic Empire originally came from Colin Cantwell and Ralph McQuarrie. Joe Johnston, who was the visual effects art director and overall storyboard artist for the entire trilogy was very involved in the final finessing of the ships and Death Star designs. Only four T.I.E. Fighters were built for the first Star Wars film. Grant McCune, head of the model shop, used a fairly heavy but stable resin for the body of the ship and other resins for the tinier parts. It has a central hollow aluminum knuckle with six-way threadings for top, bottom, front, back, left and right side mounting options with 11/16 in. hollow threaded rods as wiring conduits which attached to the various self-lit neon blue pylons. The hexagonal wings are created of fine expanded metal sheeting. Much of the intricate design detail was robbed from plastic model kits, then modified and affixed.

From Friday, the Emirates Airline's first class passengers on board the new superjumbo A380 Airbus will be able to indulge in 'shower spas'. But they will be limited to a five-minute dousing to ensure that all 14 first class passengers can enjoy the luxury. For a mere £4,737 first class passengers will be able to enjoy a five-minute shower during a flight between Heathrow and Dubai. But on the delicate matter of potentially intimate and amorous encounters, the airline is swift to point out that each shower has been designed to accommodate just one person at a time: 'They are designed for single usage' said a spokesman. First class also boasts 14 flat-bed, massage-equipped 'Private Suites' which include remote controlled doors, a work desk, an electrically controlled mini-bar and the most advanced in-flight entertainment system available to travellers. The plane will have to take on board an additional 500kg of water, an increase of some 25 percent - adding to fuel. [ link ]

On Tuesday, an inventor from New Zealand unveiled what he calls "the world's first practical jetpack" at the EAA AirVenture, the gigantic annual air show here. The inventor, Glenn Martin, 48, who has spent 27 years developing the devices, said he hoped to begin selling them next year for $100,000 apiece. It stands about five feet tall and its rotors are encased in two large ducts that look a bit like cupcakes. It rests on three legs. The Jetpack with twin rotors and its 200-horsepower engine which produces 600 lbs of thrust and can be piloted 30 miles in 30 minutes on a full tank of fuel gas - it carries five gallons. Operated by a joy stick-like control. "There is nothing that even comes close to the dream that the jetpack allows you to achieve." Robert Thompson.
