Mission Control Desk created by Jeff High Smith.
"My older son recently started school and needed his own desk for doing homework. I wanted to make something nicer than a simple tabletop with legs, and realized that I could also build in a bit of fun for when the homework is finished. Both my boys and I still had space travel on our minds from our summer trip to Kennedy Space Center. For this desk project, I decided to go with a NASA theme.
I researched the Apollo Program as well as NASA’s Mission Control Center, and designed my own console roughly based on those. I say “roughly” because the actual Mission Control does more monitoring than controlling, and isn’t awash in the whiz-bang rocket noises young kids appreciate. I took great liberties and made more of a “space-themed” play console than an accurate simulator. My goal was simply to provide some extra ideas and sound effects for my two sons to play “space” together

    Emotional body maps
    Gear  |  Pic
Researchers at Aalto University in Finland have compiled maps of emotional feelings associated with culturally universal bodily sensations, which could be at the core of emotional experience. The researchers found that the most common emotions trigger strong bodily sensations, and the bodily maps of these sensations were topographically different for different emotions. The study asked 700 participants from Finland, Sweden, and Taiwan to watch a series of emotional words, stories, movies, or facial expressions while coloring in areas on paper body silhouettes where they felt increasing or decreasing activity. Putting all of the data together resulted in the images that you see above. “Unraveling the subjective bodily sensations associated with human emotions may help us to better understand mood disorders such as depression and anxiety, which are accompanied by altered emotional processing, autonomic nervous system activity, and somatosensation (body sensations),” the researchers said in an open-access paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

WheelchairBound Woman Walks Again With a 3D Printed
    Gear  |  News

In 1992, Amanda Boxtel was paralyzed from the waist down in a catastrophic skiing accident. Doctors told her she'd never walk again. But 22 years later, thanks to the world's first 3D printed exoskeleton developed by 3D Systems and EksoBionics, she's able to stand up and move around on her own. Boxtel's new exoskeleton, the first of its kind, was custom-built for her. Designers from 3D Systems scanned her body, digitizing the contours of her spine, thighs, and shins, a process that helped them mold the robotic suit to her. Then they combined the suit with a set of mechanical actuators and controls made by EksoBionics. The result, said 3D Systems, is the first-ever "bespoke" exoskeleton.
