    Cute Banana Dolphins
    Gear  |  DIY
Luz says she created these cute banana dolphins for her son’s class on Snack Day.
"First you find some nice and bright colored bananas with hardly any bruising on them. Then you wash them under water and dry them gently. Use a sharp knife and cut the stem all the way to the banana and a little past to make a smile and to be able to open them to put a grape into the opening"

In this short documentary, George Lucas, actor Mark Hamill, and sound designer Ben Burtt discuss how the lightsaber was born.
"In a clip from Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, the lightsaber is introduced by Obi-Wan Kenobi, who says it's "not as clumsy or random as a blaster. An elegant weapon for a more civilized age." Thus, the lightsaber also became a symbol for more peaceful, honorable times, representing what the galaxy was like before the Empire. Originally, Lucas says, Jedi were meant to fight with just swords. But to give the weapon a technological edge, they became "laser swords," able to deflect incoming fire -- which made sense, character-wise, as Jedi were not meant to be warlike, aggressive fighters."

    Double O Bike Lights
    Gear  |  Bike

Designer Paul Cocksedge has designed a set of cool bicycle lights called the Double O(funding on Kickstarter) which stay in place using magnets and incorporate rechargeable batteries, and bright LEDs. Push on the back Double O and snap on the front Double O and the magnets inside will securely hold them in place.
"Double O bike lights have magnets inside so putting them on and taking them off is hassle free. Fix the polycarbonate mounts onto the bike frame with the nut and bolt provided. Push on the back Double O and snap on the front Double O and the magnets inside will securely hold them in place.
Double O’s are extremely robust and hard wearing. Along with a polycarbonate shell and silicone backing, they also have neodymium-grade magnets inside to make them really strong. We have done extensive tests to ensure that the magnets are robust enough and the lights stay on."

8 hours of airliners departing from Los Angeles in one single
    Gear  |  Pic

Los Angeles architectural photographer Mike Kelley posted this awesome image of almost all the departures LAX during a period of eight hours last Sunday. Here is his explanation:
"This is (almost!) every departure and a few arrivals at LAX's south complex yesterday. I spent almost the whole day there and another eight or so hours in photoshop putting this all together. I took some artistic liberty with the angles of attack to make a more interesting photograph, but for the most part this is all very similar to how it would appear if you were to go and watch yourself. There are two runways and both were being used for takeoffs, so that explains the size differences and depth differences between the planes.
If you look to the right of the tower, I also tried to get some of the heavies arriving. Singapore, Air France, Malaysia, Air New Zealand and Emirates A380s and 772s

    A 3D printed Thermoplastic skull
    Gear  |  Tech

This is the 3-D printed thermoplastic skull recently transplanted on a 22-year old woman's head who has a condition that prevents her regular skull from ever stop growing thicker. So they cut the top off of that one and replaced it with a 3D-printed implant made of polyetherketoneketone(PEKK, a thermoplastic). Watch a video of the process, and a shot of the skull after transplant.
"The skull, made by an Australian firm, is actually fairly transparent. Lots of plastics can be transparent -- acrylics, polycarbonates, etc. -- but the stringent medical requirements, and also print requirements, place limits on the possible. While the transparency may be incidental, the picture above shows the clear advantage of such transparency: one can see the underlying brain and vasculature. Not only is this a nice feedback to see how things are going macroscopically, it also entices with potential to optically image activity in the brain like never before."
