IV-1 Recyclable Plastic Bike

IV-1 Recyclable Plastic Bike
Car  |  Motorcycle
This plastic bicycle designed to be fully recyclable. By Matt Clark. He is a young industrial designer from Southern California. His IV-1 (for Innervision 1) bike polypropylene frame looks cool!
This bicycle prototype is aimed at improving and solving multiple issues involved in production. Particular attention was paid to maximize the potential utilization of automated processes and more cost efficient materials (IE: plastics).
The bicycle consists entirely of reinforced and unreinforced recyclable polypropylene. The patent-pending bicycle features a two component
frame: the plastic INNERFRAME and the plastic outer structure, both (in this iteration) dual components sets. Ideally, the material would be sourced from recycled plastic sources (IE: previously used consumer products such as bottles, containers, etc) to reduce environmental impact and to reduce material costs.
If any of you have questions or want more information about the design, you can contact Matt directly by email.

DIY Your BatMan Tumbler?!

DIY BatMan Tumbler
Car  |  Other
The Bob Dullam, a really BatMan Tumbler fan. He DIY his Tumbler replica from the movies Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. This piece of automotive insanity is built from scratch using only references he could find on the Internet. One of his posts estimates the cost of the build to be around $50-70k USD. Bob says:
No, not building this to sell. You wouldn't want to sell this if you had one, believe me. It's a once in a lifetime project.
I did this alone, no help. I have found with other things in the past that if you have help, the help often does not get it(parts) right, and you have to do it over 95% of the time, plus I like to work alone. All parts are scratch built, cept' tires, rims, brakes, engine, etc.. meaning all bodyparts, brackets, just about everything external on the car. Yes, I will do a batpod, and TDK suit for myself. I love building this stuff.

Toyota Winglet(Update a video)

Toyota Winglet
Car  |  Transportation
Tokyo announced today development of the "Winglet",a personal transport assistance robot ridden in a standing position. The Winglet consists of a body (with a projected area the size of an A3 sheet of paper) that houses an electric motor, two wheels and internal sensors that constantly monitor the user's position and make adjustments in power to ensure stability. Meanwhile, a unique parallel link mechanism allows the rider to go forward, backward and turn simply by shifting body weight, making the vehicle safe and useful even in tight spaces or crowded environments. TMC has created three models, the "L", "M" and "S", each having different handling, they can reach at 6Km/h cruising speed for up to 10km a jaunt (only 5km for the S model). They will begin testing in Autumn 2008 at Central Japan International Airport (Centrair) near Nagoya, and Laguna Gamagori. The first Toyota Winglets are expected to roll off of the production line in 2010. I think the Segway don't like this news. [ link ]

Aqua Submersible Watercraft

Aqua Submersible Watercraft

This concept is a one-manned submersible watercraft that can sail both on and under the surface of water. It was developed for the day when, due to increased crowding and pollution, humans will be living on and under the oceans. Then, people will need a new type of underwater transportation, like a submersible craft. The Aqua has a dolphin-like shape that is ideal for moving under the water. The design also explored controlling buoyancy, supplying oxygen and how to protect the driver from water pressure. Designed by Korean designers Sungchul Yang and Woonghee Han. Introduce a bike, The X-bike. This was to have small wheels 每 essential elements when trying to save weight and space on a folding bike.
> The frame 每 two main frame elements fold in a scissor action by a skew joint. This allows the wheels to fold side by side.
> Steering 每 this was by auto-tensioned cables via variable ratio pulleys. These provide a good steering feel to hub-centre steering.
> Drive 每 this was by internal belt or miniature chain.
> Construction 每 this uses injection-moulded long fibre carbon and glass shells ultra-sonically welded together. Fusible core, foam and gas injection technologies were also used.
> Tyres 每 solid tyres were developed as an option with PU versions performing better than pneumatic equivalents.
This project was undertaken in collaboration with David Southward (CCL founder) and Shaun Househam. More Pics.

Parajet Skycar - World's First Carbon-Neutral Flying Car!

Parajet Skycar
Car  |  Transportation
The Parajet Skycar will be the world's first carbon neutral flying car. The Skycar Expedition team plan to take the eye-catching vehicle from London to Timbouctou in 2009, using a combination of flight and driving to battle the tough Saharan terrain. The 3000 miles of journey from London to Timbouctou. The Parajet Skycar betweens a dune buggy and a paraglider. The Parajet Skycar powered by a biodiesel-modified Yamaha R1 1000cc motorcycle engine. The motor runs through a Continuously Variable Transmission either to power the rear wheels or to turn a large rear-facing propeller via a belt drive.
The Parajet Skycar in fly mode will be suspended by the latest ram-air wing and capable of take-off from a field or airstrip in less than 200 metres. It will be easier and safer to fly than any other aircraft, as it has no pitch control and therefore impossible to stall or dive. Should the engine fail, the pilot would simply glide down into the nearest field or strip of sandy desert. In the event of catastrophic wing failure, car connection system failure or mid-air collision, an emergency ballistic reserve parachute can be deployed. Its steel framed chassis, subsequent models will be made from aluminium which will be lighter and thus increase range, performance and luggage capacity. It has independent 4 wheel suspension and rear wheel drive. One pilot and one passenger will travel side by side and in road mode the car will accelerate 0-100 kmph in 4.5 seconds, have a top speed of 180 kmph and a range of 400 km. In fly mode the Parajet Skycar will have a take-off speed of 60 kmph, a top speed of 110 kmph and a range of 300 km. Cruising altitude will be 2000 每 3000 ft with a maximum altitude of 15,000 ft. Conversion from "road mode" to "fly mode" and visa-versa will take just three minutes. The prototype is expected to cost only UK£35,000, Cool!

Boeing Teams With SkyHook to Build Heavy-Lift Rotorcraft

SkyHook JHL-40
Car  |  Transportation
The SkyHook JHL-40 is a neutrally buoyant heavy-lift aircraft being designed and built by Boeing for SkyHook International Inc. It is designed to carry up to 80,000 pounds and fly up to 200 miles without refueling in harsh environments such as the Canadian Arctic. The neutrally buoyant feature allows SkyHook to safely carry payloads unmatched by any rotorcraft in existence today. The helium-filled envelope is sized to support the weight of the vehicle and fuel without payload. With the empty weight of the aircraft supported by the envelope, the lift generated by four rotors is dedicated solely to lifting the payload, leaving the aircraft neutrally buoyant. It is expected to benefit several industries, including energy, mining and logging. And I think it will be a good vehicle for the earthquake assist.

The Opel Eye Camera system is a Traffic Sign Recognition and Lane Departure Warning system available early next year in new model opel vauxhall insignia cars, which scans the road ahead at 30 frames per second to read road signs and tell you when you're wandering from your lane. The Traffic Sign Detection can read speed limit and no-passing signs and even notify drivers when speed restrictions have been lifted. Depending on light conditions, the system begins to recognize and repeatedly read signs at 100 meters. The Opel Eye camera also checks whether drivers stay in their chosen lane on the highway. This helps prevent a dangerous situation, such as a driver falling asleep at the wheel. Lane Departure Warning can be switched on or off via a button. When active, it warns the driver with a gong sound and a blinking signal on the instrument panel.
