This chapel in the countryside of Southern Chile, by Claudio Baladron and Diego Grass. It is a wooden barn structure over a concrete platform with corrugated metal cladding in the outside and pine boards in the inside. Beautiful!
"There are oaks, wind and rain coming from the west. A dusty road is at the east.
Community soccer field is south; bamboo and empty beer cans all over the north.
Now there is also a wooden barn structure over a concrete platform,
with corrugated metal cladding in the outside and pine boards in the inside,
plus 100 chairs, lectern, altar, virgin figure and a cross.
Mass is once a month, community activities every evening. Both happen in the same space.
A new chapel for 100 people in the remote countryside of Southern Chile.

A Giganitic Trigone Designed for New Orleans

Array

Home  |  Building
NOAH (New Orleans Arcology Habitat) or Arco(short for arcology), this massive trigone building that contains all the elements of a city within one structure. NOAH is a 1200-foot-tall arco designed especially for New Orleans. NOAH proposes to be a habitat for 40,000 residents who can benefit from the planned residential units, school system, commercial, retail, hotels, casinos, parking, and public works facilities. And features this structure will use an array of green systems, including solar panels, water turbines, wind turbines, fresh water recovery, and a passive solar glazing system.
Design Challenge:
1. The first challenge is to overcome both the physical and psychological damages of recurring severe weather patterns. Though re-population has begun, the need to provide a stabilized and safe environment is paramount to a long term recovery and economic well being of New Orleans.
2. The second challenge is that New Orleans has too much water. The city has been built at and below sea levels which creates consistently high water table and makes it prone to flooding and storm surges.
3. The third challenge is that New Orleans is built on soil condition which consists of thousands of feet of soft soil, silt and clay. These conditions make building large scale concentrated structures difficult.
Believing that NOAH is a viable plan, our solution to overcome these challenges is to take advantage of these seemingly conflicting issues with the introduction of a floating urban platform.

Humble Telescope

Humble Telescope is a universe telescope that exists a 3D simulation of our entire known universe. The Humble Telescope is designed as an interactive civic sculpture that brings the wonders of space down to earth and into our cities, to encourage us learn more about the universe and perhaps appreciate our own world a little more.
"Inside the telescope exists a 3D simulation of our entire known universe. Pointing the telescope in any direction immediately shows us what exists in that area of space, so now we can get a greater understanding of where the planets are and where we live in the Milky Way. The Humble Telescope serves as an on-going reminder of how truly amazing our universe is, and how truly small." Designed by designers ENESS.

Climb Your Dormitory

This is a new dormitory building in Enschede, a city in the east of the Netherlands. It has a climbing wall on the side of this nine story building. According to the architect it is the second highest one in the Netherlands. Cool! By Arons & Gelauff Architects. This climbing wall features 30 meters high, 2500 grips.
ˇ°It was a gift from the client to the inhabitants of the campus, because the university of Enschede has a very active and successful mountaineering club ¨C however paradoxical that may sound in the flat Netherlandsˇ±, Arons & Gelauff Architects write, ˇ°As a climber in the Netherlands, one anyway has to resort to artificially created training spots, so why not combine architecture and climbing wall?ˇ±

2+ Weekend House

Array

The 2+ Weekend House is a container house with a difference - it's made with containers manufactured expressly for housing (vs. cargo containers). Designed by Jure Kotnik Arhitekt. It is pretty!
"As opposed to the other container projects, which mostly feed on the excess of available cargo containers, ConHouse pushes the development of containers manufactured especially for housing and office purposes." The 2+ Weekend House is a two-level mini housing unit composed of two containers perpendicular to each other. The upper container provides a projecting roof above the entrance as well as serves to shelter the back terrace. The ceiling of the bottom container is also a terrace of the first floor. "The system's modular nature enables containers to be added to or subtracted from the compound as needed, so that the ConHouse can grow or contract depending on the actual spatial needs of the people using it. Lower prices of such live/work units make them competitive as compared to traditional housing and are intended to increase the number of home-owners, who can then use the extra cash to expand their living space or invest more into interior design."

Bridging Architecture

Array
Home  |  Building
US based Steven Holl Architects has just won the international design competition "The LM Project". With a program that connects office towers and civic spaces with a public walkway 65 meters above the harbor, the new design is intended to form an iconic landmark for Copenhagen's waterfront. The amazing bridge, I love this design! The Marmormolen tower connects back to the City with a main terrace that thrusts out towards the city horizon shaped by a public auditorium below. It can also be reached by escalators and is adjacent to the public bridge elevator lobby. Each tower carries its own cable-stay bridge that is a public passageway between the two piers. Due to the site geometry, these bridges meet at an angle, joining like a handshake over the harbor.

Casa Tolo By Alvaro Leite Siza Vieira

The Casa Tolo by portuguese architect Alvaro Leite Siza Vieira. This building located on a steep hill in northern portugual. "instead of fighting the natural environment, the architect embraced it using the slope as the home's main characteristic. the home begins at the top of the hill and slowly reveals itself as you descend down the outdoor staircase. the home was designed as a vacation home for the architect's cousin, wife and children. despite the familiar connection the home was built on a tight budget of 150,000 usd. the various rooms are divided among the levels, each one even has its own patio space. despite the frontal exposure to the hot sun, the residence is cooled by the earth which surrounds it on three sides." I love this house or building design, it is unique and a clever design that using the slope. photographs © fg+sg/fernando guerra Check out see more pics.
