Portrait of Leonardo Da Vinci made out of nails. By Tirana (Albania)-based artist Saimir Strati.
"Using industrial nails, the artist re-created the self portrait of Leonardo Da Vinci using nearly 400 kilos[880 pounds] of nails over a 2x4m[6.5 feet x 13 feet] surface. The technique resembles digital photography, in that each nail represents a pixel. According to the Guinness Book of World Records it's the world's largest nail mosaic."

"Sun Cat" Batteries

Rechargeable Batteries with Solar Cells, Called "Sun Cat" Batteries, by Knut Karlsen. The batteries should just bask in the sun like a cat and left for a while, in a sunny window, they would slowly recharge. A great and green idea! Knut also DIY these batteries prototypes.
"I had some older NiMH rechargeable batteries that i glued the flexible Photo Voltaic (PV) cells onto. The PV cells are rated at 1.8V and the batteries are 1.5V so they match quite well.
Half glued you can see the really shiny polymer substrate backside of the PV cell. The crude written text says: 3x0,6V B: 13.411.09 Which i guess is the voltage and a batch number.
Using a conductive silver pen and some flat wires from a broken canon lens I made an ok connection to the PV cell.
This setup is infact a (quite weak) trickle charger. It is not ideal, but really convenient. A second version would have some electronics (to check when full) and capacitors to charge the batteries more efficiently, but the battery would then be smaller if it all needs to fit within a C-cell battery. Eames-Inspired Prosthetic Leg by Joanna Hawley

We has just features a 'Immaculate' arm concept, now Joanna Hawley did a 'Immaculate' Prosthetic Leg. Eames-Inspired Prosthetic Leg by Joanna Hawley.
"Prosthetics generally lack humanity, style and grace. Often, they look much like landing gear and make the wearer uncomfortable, self aware, and sometimes depressed. By channeling the Eames' use materials and iconic style, we designed a leg with Steve McQueen in mind. We sought to convey a creative use of positive and negative space, a balance of materials and a reflection of the wearer.
This project taught me to expand my use of research materials. We interviewed several amputees in varying stages of acceptance, met with Sephora color specialists to discuss skin tones, and 3D laser scanned actual legs to translate the proportions of the human body into CAD. Through a wide range of techniques, I explored the challenge of designing something with the body in mind."

By Jammer Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada, created a 2.5 acre sand painting of Obama in Barcelona, Spain. Named "Expectation," This Obama's portrait made of 650 tons of sand and and gravel.
"EXPECTATION is a large ephemeral sand painting portraying the likeness of Barack Obama, located in the Catalan city of Barcelona. It was created before the 2008 US presidential election using a large-scale vector graphic, a GPS topography system and approximately 650 tons of sand.
The work's grand scale (1 hectare / 2.5 acres) embodies the immense sense of hope felt by Barack Obama's supporters and raises a mirror to reflect the source of that hope. Obama has awakened an enormous yearning for change that runs deep beneath decades of disaffection with the political establishment. "

Homemade Smallest Russian Submarine

The Russian Colin sez has built his personal submarine, the smallest submarine in Russia and officially registered as boat by Russian boat registry with its own name and No. He drove it from St. Petersburg to Helsinki, Finland and back without stops as fast as four knots, Cool! Colin sez, "40-year-old Mikhail Puchkov designed and bulit a a personal submarine during the stifling era of Leonid Brezhnev's regime when he was barely twenty years old. He built it secretly in an attic in Ryazan, about 120 miles southeast of Moscow."
¡°I was not satisfied with the fate that was laid out for me. I wanted to satisfy myself and to have some respect for my life. If I learned to respect myself, I felt it would be easier to find my niche in life. I didn't know it would work. I just hoped.¡±
His family, particularly his father, condemned him and his submarine flights of fancy, and the longer the construction took, the more he complained. The first test of the sub came in 1984 and it ¡°sank like a stone,¡± in Puchkov¡¯s own words, breaking a rudder in the process and setting a climate for the early dives, which were always a bit tense. He said of those times:
¡°I was so distracted watching for leaks and checking all the equipment, that I didn't have time to enjoy it. You don't remember a thing afterward.¡±
It took three years before he was able to get the submarine to dive and surface. In 1988, he put the reinforced plastic sub in a box on a truck and shipped it to the Tosna River about 15 miles south of St. Petersburg. There, he continued his nocturnal voyages and in 1994, he took to the open sea on a secret cruise to the island of Kronshtadt, a closed military base in the Gulf of Finland.

Cloaca by Belgian Wim Delvoye. Cloaca No. 5 is a mechanized sculpture that reproduces the human digestive system in every stomach-churning detail. At the end of the pipe, the machine produces feces, which are vacuum-packed! Wow, a machine just produces feces, Cool?! It is a part of exhibition which opens until valentine's day in the universite du quebec's art, Montreal. Cloaca, a towering steel, rubber and glass contraption, is fed twice a day with cafeteria leftovers during this exhibit.
"I wanted to make something that is absurdly unnecessary..."
Wim Delvoye explained his creative process:
"I don't think this biologically correct machine belongs in a science museum.
I don't have that ego. I'm not helping sick people. I'm practically useless in society."
