Low-Cost Solution to Keep On Biking

Array

Gear  |  Bike
A low-cost solution to keep on biking. One of the cyclists at Dutch Bike Co. was caught without studded tires when it started snowing in Seattle. But there's nothing that a box of zip ties can't fix! MacGyver trick isn't new, but now that winter is here... Fritz Rice, the the DIYer on these photos, says that while the ties look "completely ludicrous", they work "beautifully":
"I can accelerate, brake, and corner with aplomb, even on the vile snowpack/sheet ice mix the plows leave in the bike lanes. The zip ties dig nicely into the hardest packed surfaces, but they're thin enough not to bounce the bike around at low speed or on short pavement sections. "

Stringbike

A company called StringBike, has developed new drivetrain technology for bicycles that "placement of the chain and gears on one side of the frame on a traditional bike causes a subtle, although not unnoticeable, asymmetrical pedaling experience." "It allows for continuous pushing of the rear wheel on both sides of the bike (whereas on a normal bike, usually only one leg is doing the pushing at a time as it goes around in a circle). " It’s essentially like having two chains on each side, both connected to the rear hub — only it’s high-strength cord, not chain. Watch the String Bike in action.

Bob Maddox built the latest jet bike combined twin jet engines, it is a contracted project for another presumably crazy biker who wants to ride the damned thing. According to Maddox, who did five test runs on the bike before handing it over to its new owner, it does 0-60 in “maybe five seconds.” Handling is “smooth and stable,” although it’s so powerful that it “wants to pull your arms off.”
