Car  |  Transportation
The Flying Car will get real. A team at Terrafugia is about to a consumer vehicle that can take to the highways and the skies. The Transition($194,000) will go for sale by the end of 2009 for $194,000. The Transition with a pusher prop, four wheels and a pair of 10-foot-wide wings. It features designed to automotive crash safety standards, with an option for a full-vehicle parachute. The Transition is gas powered, can fly a range of about 450 miles. The first Terrafugia Transition is scheduled to take to the air next month. From the pictures, it looks so heavy, I feel it can not fly high and fast, but it is a good beginning. If you want to fly it, you will need a pilot's license to fly the Transition, but just a light sport license, which is significantly cheaper and easier to obtain.

Kahuna - the Boat has aTent

Array
Car  |  Transportation
A cool boat which you can camp in the sea or lake! Kahuna is a new touring boat, inspired by old Polynesian outrigger canoes. It was developed for recreational use in various environments around the globe, created mainly for rental agencies and for outdoor enthusiasts. The combination of sports equipment and camping gear allows efficient mobility and a comfortable overnight stay.
The main drive of the Kahuna is the Mirage Drive, a pedal/crank mechanism of Hobie Kayaks. This is a very efficient drive system that is easy to master. An ordinary paddle assists in manoeuvring the boat. Even inexperienced users adapt very quickly. For camping, a screen cloth is mounted between the outriggers to serve as base for the tent and as camp bed. This ensures a comfortable sleep even on rough ground that would usually be unsuitable for camping
The boat is made of natural fibre composite materials, which are lighter and cheaper than fibreglass and with the right resin can even be biodegradable, when reduced to small pieces.

The CIV was developed to aid research for the Moon Regan TransAntarctic Expedition. The biofuel powered, propeller-driven trike on skids is 4.5 meters long and 4.5 meters wide with an independent suspension all around. It also has an ice penetrating radar to detect crevasses and is light enough for a man to be pulled, if necessary. It also appears to have a spiked "foot" under the cockpit, perhaps for stopping on icy terrain. Check out its video.

Toyota Winglet(Update a video)

Array
Car  |  Transportation
Tokyo announced today development of the "Winglet",a personal transport assistance robot ridden in a standing position. The Winglet consists of a body (with a projected area the size of an A3 sheet of paper) that houses an electric motor, two wheels and internal sensors that constantly monitor the user's position and make adjustments in power to ensure stability. Meanwhile, a unique parallel link mechanism allows the rider to go forward, backward and turn simply by shifting body weight, making the vehicle safe and useful even in tight spaces or crowded environments. TMC has created three models, the "L", "M" and "S", each having different handling, they can reach at 6Km/h cruising speed for up to 10km a jaunt (only 5km for the S model). They will begin testing in Autumn 2008 at Central Japan International Airport (Centrair) near Nagoya, and Laguna Gamagori. The first Toyota Winglets are expected to roll off of the production line in 2010. I think the Segway don't like this news. [ link ]

Parajet Skycar - World's First Carbon-Neutral Flying Car!

Array
Car  |  Transportation
The Parajet Skycar will be the world's first carbon neutral flying car. The Skycar Expedition team plan to take the eye-catching vehicle from London to Timbouctou in 2009, using a combination of flight and driving to battle the tough Saharan terrain. The 3000 miles of journey from London to Timbouctou. The Parajet Skycar betweens a dune buggy and a paraglider. The Parajet Skycar powered by a biodiesel-modified Yamaha R1 1000cc motorcycle engine. The motor runs through a Continuously Variable Transmission either to power the rear wheels or to turn a large rear-facing propeller via a belt drive.
The Parajet Skycar in fly mode will be suspended by the latest ram-air wing and capable of take-off from a field or airstrip in less than 200 metres. It will be easier and safer to fly than any other aircraft, as it has no pitch control and therefore impossible to stall or dive. Should the engine fail, the pilot would simply glide down into the nearest field or strip of sandy desert. In the event of catastrophic wing failure, car connection system failure or mid-air collision, an emergency ballistic reserve parachute can be deployed. Its steel framed chassis, subsequent models will be made from aluminium which will be lighter and thus increase range, performance and luggage capacity. It has independent 4 wheel suspension and rear wheel drive. One pilot and one passenger will travel side by side and in road mode the car will accelerate 0-100 kmph in 4.5 seconds, have a top speed of 180 kmph and a range of 400 km. In fly mode the Parajet Skycar will have a take-off speed of 60 kmph, a top speed of 110 kmph and a range of 300 km. Cruising altitude will be 2000 ¨C 3000 ft with a maximum altitude of 15,000 ft. Conversion from "road mode" to "fly mode" and visa-versa will take just three minutes. The prototype is expected to cost only UK£35,000, Cool!

Boeing Teams With SkyHook to Build Heavy-Lift Rotorcraft

Array
Car  |  Transportation
The SkyHook JHL-40 is a neutrally buoyant heavy-lift aircraft being designed and built by Boeing for SkyHook International Inc. It is designed to carry up to 80,000 pounds and fly up to 200 miles without refueling in harsh environments such as the Canadian Arctic. The neutrally buoyant feature allows SkyHook to safely carry payloads unmatched by any rotorcraft in existence today. The helium-filled envelope is sized to support the weight of the vehicle and fuel without payload. With the empty weight of the aircraft supported by the envelope, the lift generated by four rotors is dedicated solely to lifting the payload, leaving the aircraft neutrally buoyant. It is expected to benefit several industries, including energy, mining and logging. And I think it will be a good vehicle for the earthquake assist.

Car  |  Transportation
Another Sea Limousine fit for Dubai's The World. The Saleen Aquada($TBD) is cross between a Jet Ski and a quad bike, it can reach speeds of 40 mph on land and water. The Aquada is intended to work as a sports car on the road and a speedboat on the water. "Simply press a button and drive into the water. The wheels automatically rise and as you press the accelerator nearly a tonne of thrust pushes the Aquada onto the plane. The whole process takes less than 12 seconds. The Aquada can plane at over 30mph." Saleen will be conducting manufacturing design and engineering work required to bring the Gibbs Aquada and Quadski to the North American market. Gibbs plans to introduce the models here late in 2009 or early in 2010. And Saleen is also looking at ways to improve their performance.
