Students Build Hydrogen Powered Motorcycle

Array
Car  |  Motorcycle
Students of engineering at the Swarthmore College, Alex Bell(right on the photo) and Andres Pacheco(left) have bulit a hydrogen fuel cell powered motorcycle. Powered by hydrogen, Cool!
The motorcycle is built on the chassis of a Buell cyclone which was purchased at a salvage yard. In the original internal combustion form the engine served as a structural member. Therefore when the motor was removed a piece was designed to provide the structural support needed for the swingarm, frame, motor, and rear shock connection.
The fuel cell is made by Ballard, which generate 1.2 kw power and is coupled with a 1.6hp electric motor. The pure hydrogen is stored in two Ergenics metal hydride cylinders which each can store about hold 900 std. liters of hydrogen. The inside of the cylinders are filled with a metal powder consisting of Lathnium, Nickel, and Aluminum. The metal reacts with hydrogen to form a hydride thereby storing large amounts of hydrogen at low pressure in a small volume. however, does need some heat." According to the report, after averaging in losses in propulsion, this motorcycle efficiency is expected to be 46%. If you have interest it, you can contact them at the bottom of this page.

Hubless Monster Motorcycle

Car  |  Motorcycle
This bikeruns on the hubless wheels(spokeless wheels), Cool! By biker boys at Amen Design. Inspired by Franco Sbarro's hubless wheels. Hubless wheels work by fixing the rotating parts (brake ring, bearings, hubless rim) onto the outer side of a non-rotating inner ring that attaches to the motorcycle's swingarm or forks. Advantages include decreased unsprung weight, reduced structural stress (no spokes to transmit forces through), increased braking leverage, more accurate steering, reduced vibration and a lower center of gravity. This bike looks Cool! More pics and video jump more.

IV-1 Recyclable Plastic Bike

Array
Car  |  Motorcycle
This plastic bicycle designed to be fully recyclable. By Matt Clark. He is a young industrial designer from Southern California. His IV-1 (for Innervision 1) bike polypropylene frame looks cool!
This bicycle prototype is aimed at improving and solving multiple issues involved in production. Particular attention was paid to maximize the potential utilization of automated processes and more cost efficient materials (IE: plastics).
The bicycle consists entirely of reinforced and unreinforced recyclable polypropylene. The patent-pending bicycle features a two component
frame: the plastic INNERFRAME and the plastic outer structure, both (in this iteration) dual components sets. Ideally, the material would be sourced from recycled plastic sources (IE: previously used consumer products such as bottles, containers, etc) to reduce environmental impact and to reduce material costs.
If any of you have questions or want more information about the design, you can contact Matt directly by email.
