YikeBike Now Available For Sale
Gear  |  Bike

if you remembered this YikeBike from New Zealand? We first saw the Yike Bike over a year ago. Now it is available in the U.S. for 'just' $3,595. The YikeBike is a carbon-fiber electric bike, weights only 22 pounds (10.8 kg), is capable of going up to 6.2 miles on a single charge, and tops out around 14mph. You ride it by sitting on the combined saddle/handlebar, and when you reach the destination, you can fold the bike, and put the in a bag. Watch it in action!

Errr... what's wrong with a normal bicycle?
- it's cheaper & simpler
- you can pedal it and the range is enormous
- you can put pannier bags on it to carry things

This is a solution looking for a problem - a common theme in our 'consumer society'...

Yuck.

I have had one of these for about 6 weeks now and am surprised at how much I use it. I'm a big cycle fan and would normally be cycling to work most days. The big advantage over cycling is that I don't end up sweating and needing a shower (I struggle to go slow enough to not sweat).

The other advantage is because it takes no effort I use it more than I would a regular bike. So I find I use my car a lot less. Yesterday I used it for 6 small trips round the neighborhood that I would have normally used my car for. It could be because it's new and I just want to use it - but if this keeps up it will easily pay for itself.

Really cool design, but "YIKES!" is it expensive!  The average electric bike costs half as much!  I hope it goes down in price and becomes more widely available for consumers to use like Shaun.
