It has to be made to fit the knives you have, the blade tip or edge cannot contact the wood. It looks as if the slot design is naive. The wood does not look stabilized so it will continue cracking. You killed a tree.

if the knife can't contact the wood, will it just mysteriously levitate or have some kind of force field so the knife and wood block can't  touch? Contact is needed between the knife and container, to contain the knife.

The wood could be or already is coated with varnish to prolong the life of the wood block.

Who's to say they killed a tree to create this. What if the tree was already dead and they found a way to make use of it and recycle it.

Just saying, don't be so naive.
