Tin-Shi Tam, Iowa State University carillonneur and associate professor of music and theatre, performed Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" on the carillon at noon on Aug. 27, 2010. Brad Riley, senior in journalism and mass communication, started a Facebook group and asked people to send Tam emails requesting that she play the song.

I don't like it. It's pointless, it's not even classic (in case they wanted to honour someone who offered to music many things) and it blurs an atmospheric sound and visual result which is a bell tower and a clear bell sound.

Gus, the point wasn't to honor someone.  It was more likely to show that the bells you hear daily can be used to play something you recognize. Plus, it is hilarious!  Imagine sprinting to class and when you expect to hear the noon bell you hear "Bad Romance" (or if you really dislike that song, choose another non-classical song you like.)

Improv Everywhere does stuff like this for fun and to give people a story.  Not everything has to have a serious reason behind it.
